August 12, 2007 Fishing Report (Captain Rick Huckleby) -- Good old friend Eddie Rudolph and family showed up at 5:15 am. JJ's Rock left port with 2-3' seas and winds aimed for 10-15. Destination fishing grounds the "Hot Dog". We had a big bright sunrise as we setup our spread of 13 rigs. The temperature break was 80 degrees and all anglers were ready.
JJ's Rock made her first pass with no takers...need a bite...need a bite let's try that again. No other boats in sight...so we went across on the mark a second time, wham! Oh my it's the WWB line (600 yards back). The fish was burning line off the reel like there was no tomorrow. Captain Rick made the hookup and handed the rod to Mate Clarence who relayed the rod to angler Eddie Rudolph. Eddie reeled, reeled, reeled, reeled and reeled some more until he came up with a grand Bluefin Tuna. Mate Clarence set the gaff and we had our first fish on board. We headed back to the same mark trolling across the Hot Dog, trolling down to the sausages and up to the ham bone. The fish were not too hungry but we were thinking about a sandwich after all that trolling through the food zone. We turned around and set our course to troll back through the same pattern and bam, bam, bam, bam.! -- 4 rods went down quick!!!!! Then the 5th rod went down and started screaming line off. This fish was hitting all our baits. But the 5th rig was a blue and white islander that made him take a hook. The line was tight and screaming off the reel. Angler in chair and the fight was on....reel line---fish takes more off, reel line---fish takes more off. Finally, after 30 minutes and a tired angler the fish is at the boat. Mate Clarence sets the gaff and the humongous Wahoo is on board the JJ's Rock. What a great day to be on the Ocean. Great people, great fish, great overall fishing trip. Life's good.August 12, 2007 Fishing Report (Sunset Marina) -- "Rhondas Osprey" went to the Hambone and caught 2 bluefins, "Wave Dancer also went there and caught 1 bluefin and 1 wahoo. "Muff Diver" went to the bass grounds and caught 1 yellowfin. "JJ's Rock" went to the Hot Dog and caught 1 wahoo and 1 bluefin.
June 24, 2007 Fishing Report (Captain Rick Huckleby) -- JJ's Rock left port at 5:00 am and headed for the triple 000 between Poorman's Canyon and the Washington Canyon. Scott went 2 for 5 on Yellowfin Tuna, we lost a huge dolphin at the boat. New anglers get so excited they let slack get in their line and in the blink of an eye the fish are gone. We had our first Blue Marlin crash on our way back line baited with a sea witch and horse ballyhoo. The Marlin broke off the bait and came back for the same lure. Our charter also saw several Sharks test our baits and swim away. Several enormous sea turtles were floating around enjoying the sunny day. On our journey back to shore as we passed the Hot Dog - there was a "Tuna Boil". Lots of Tunas and bait fish jumping out of the water. Tunas were feeding on a ball of bait fish.
June 23, 2007 Fishing Report (Captain Rick Huckleby) -- JJ's Rock left port at 5:00 am and arrived at the Poorman's Canyon approximately 7:15 am. The spread was put out in 72 degree water break. There were numerous pieces of wood in the area and trash, however no weed line. We trolled by a log and finally had a hit. Scott gaffed a huge 46" - 26 pound Dolphin. We stayed in the area and picked up two more Dolphins a 45" - 24 pound and another 26" - pound Dolphin. Several pull downs with no hook up....the rest of the day was slow. Windy day with chop and large waves.
June 15, 2007 Fishing Report (Captain Rick Huckleby) -- The wind and waves were howling at daybreak 5 am to be exact. So we decided to wait around to check if the seas would lay down for our party to get some fish. After receiving reports from larger vessels at sea that the waves were beginning to spread out off we went for Tuna. Our charter party was 5 friends from Central Intelligence and Ken Lahr, owner of Reel Draggin Tackle. After further checks and discussions with Captain Joe Riley and Captain Aaron Rogers we decided to head to the Baltimore Canyon. Finally we found our thermal break - warmer waters to fish. Mate Scotty Miller (aka Fishing Machine) setup a 6 rod spread consisting of 2 way way back lines, 2 large Reel Draggin spreader bars, green machine and rainbow, 1 small spreader bar with a long daisy chain accented with birds and a rigged ballyhoo tuna plug. Approximately 1 hour later --- 4 rods went down --- oh boy, with the rough seas and adrenaline flowing we boated a one huge Yellowfin Tuna. OK, with the cob webs out of our system we were ready this time. As a few minutes later --- 4 rods go off. With expert movement and advice we landed all four fish...4 big Yellowfin Tuna. After several hours our large spreader with rainbow colors goes off spooling almost all line...of a #50. Ken Lahr was on the rod and landed a 100 pound Bluefin Tuna. With an excellent gaff by Mate Scotty Miller. Look for our next fishing report coming soon.
June 15, 2007 Fishing Report (Sunset Marina) -- Although the seas were still rough today, we still had a handful of boats head offshore. "My Desire" with Capt. Bill Kneessi fished the Fingers and caught 24 Bluefish. "Shelly II" with Capt. John Brobst was at the 35 fathom line and caught a 123 pound Mako . "J.J.'s Rock" with Captain Rick Huckleby was at the Baltimore and had a great day with 5 Yellowfin Tuna and a 100 pound Bluefin. "Muff Diver" fished the Poorman's Canyon and caught 2 Yellowfin.June 01, 2007 (Captain Rick Huckleby) -- JJ's Rock was pulled on May 20 for full maintenance and back in the water on June 1. Spring 2007 Fishing Report ( Captain Rick Huckleby) -- Captain Rick Huckleby aboard the JJ's Rock had a great Spring Trophy Rockfish season. The only down side was the release of numerous slot fish. We were lucky enough to get photos of all our happy anglers with their catch and release fish. Look for the photos in our photo section. Many fish were citation size (41"+). Several of our customers caught the largest fish of their life.
